Personalized Medicine Has Friends in High Places

publication date: Jan 31, 2015

Personalized Medicine just got a lot of notice as it appeared in the State of the Union Speech

President Obama is calling for $215 million to help fund research into fighting and treating disease using “precision” or personalized medicine.  Funds would include $130 million for NIH to do genomic profiling research specific to diseases (using 1 million volunteers to provide data) and about $70 million for the National Cancer Institute to do research based on genetics.

Whether this is an initiative the Republican congress can endorse in the budget is another question.  But back in 2005 when Obama was a senator he proposed personalized medicine legislation with bipartisan support including Senarotr Richard Burr of North Carolia.
